One of my biggest grievances with Using Windows 8 for Business is that I couldn’t slide my mouse to the bottom or right-hand side of the ‘Metro’ Start Menu or any Windows 8 apps without a big gap (or view of the desktop) showing up behind it. I couldn’t find any answers online, but more »

One of my biggest grievances with Using Windows 8 for Business is that I couldn’t slide my mouse to the bottom or right-hand side of the ‘Metro’ Start Menu or any Windows 8 apps without a big gap (or view of the desktop) showing up behind it. I couldn’t find any answers online, but saw a couple of mentions discussing Windows 8 having issues scaling text and icons. I experimented with every possible resolution setting, but ended up coming back to the “Change the Size of All Items” option in the display menu.

When I first installed Windows 8, I selected 150%. I’m using a 1920×1080 15″ laptop screen (at full resolution) and can’t always see text when it is scaled to 100%.

I corrected the problem with my screen and scaling via the following steps:

Go to your Desktop

Right Click

Click on “Screen Resolution”

Click on “Make Text and Other Items Larger or Smaller”

Select either “Medium” or “Smaller”

To increase the size of the text, utilize the “Change only Text Size” option and adjust the text of menu, icons, etc to your liking.

I am taking the plunge! Currently I am installing Windows 8 on my T 530 ThinkPad as an upgrade to Windows 7. I am typically not an early adopter, but in this case was too curious to pass it up. Was able to get a great deal on the pro version, using the Windows upgrade promotion. I paid 15 dollars for pro and I’m able to upgrade to Media Center Edition for free.

So far it has taken about an hour worth of preparation (backups, clearing space, etc). I started the install approx 8 minutes ago, and
am already at 42%. I’ll continue updating this post as we go along. I anticipate this to be one of the quicker Windows upgrade that I have done. Lets hope that it doesn’t end up being a downgrade and big disappointment.

*Update* The install is complete. Total installation time was around 45 minutes – not bad for a complete OS revamp. My first impression: Pretty, if you can call it that, but not yet completely functional. It feels very.. business casual. Looks good, seems comfortable, but not completely suited for all business situations. This is on a non-touch screen Thinkpad laptop. A standard or convertible tablet would make all the difference in the world. It seems very robust for a mobile/tablet OS. It can get the job done, and still look good doing it. As a primary OS for an ‘old-school’ business computer? Not so much.
I’m sure it will just involve some tweaking, but there are a few things that bother me right off of the bat:
1. Sluggish – Opening ‘Windows 8′ apps from the new ‘Start’ menu (Metro UI) seems to involve a long drawn-out process. I am utilizing a comparatively slow internet backhaul (1.5mbps DSL), so that may have something to do with it. I still don’t see a reason why something that was Installed directly into the OS and forced onto my ‘pretty’ new start menu should lag when loading (or even being used). Switching between the Tiles view and the new simulated ‘Desktop’ is very snappy though – hit the Start button and you’re there. Once again, I have hope that the poor performance can be corrected. If a dinky Atom processor can run it, a 3.1ghz Third-Generation Core i5 and 8gb of RAM should be more than enough hardware to run this thing!
2. Window Scaling – Ooohhhh… big pet peeve. Running my mouse to either the left or the bottom of the Windows 8 ‘Metro’ Start menu makes the screen continue sliding in that direction. The worst thing is, you have to go all the way to the right or bottom to open various menus. This won’t be the case for most of you folks. I have a 1920×1200 FHD display, and apparently Windows 8 wasn’t really set up to run at this resolution (I guess they didn’t think tablets would be there for a few years). I’m still digging around on the internet to see how I can correct this. If I can’t, it may be the dealbreaker that sends me over the edge.
3. Store – Love it and hate it. Awesome having all sorts of apps at your fingertips, but the selection isn’t at the Apple (or even Android level), and the Store app itself is SLOW. Installing apps seems to take multiple tries. I keep getting errors (“This App Wasn’t Installed Correctly”) with the Netflix and Hulu+ apps, even though they already have tiles on the Start menu. These are apps that are advertised all over the best as being the “Best Apps for Windows 8″ and yet they won’t install right off-of-the-bat. Shame guys – lets get our act together.
4. *To Be Continued*

I am sitting on the couch after a 2am feeding my one-week old, and realized that I have yet to write anything, anywhere (other than posting pics on Facebook) about becoming a dad. I guess it is time to rectify that!

My son, Samuel Adam Redko was born a 9:58 am last week. He was a surprising 7lb and 4oz. Surprising because we were told that he would be a 9lb-10lb baby, and his 3d/4d ultrasounds showed a baby much chunkier than the one I held in my arms that morning. No matter- I was (an am) ecstatic to be a dad. This has been a long time coming for my wife and I. We have been married 7 years this November, and are very happy to have the opportunity enter into this new stage of our relationship and family unit.

Being a parent is everything and nothing like what they tell you. Sleep deprivation was not exaggerated. I am averaging 3-4 hours of sleep a day. This is not that strange for me, as I am a workaholic/part-time insomniac even on the best of days. What is different is that those 3-4 hours are broken up into 30minute and 1hr increments. It is not that Sam is a particularly fussy baby – in fact he is one of the most chill babies that I have come across. Every minute of every day so far has been so full of activity that sleep has taken a back-seat. I have a feeding every 3-3.5hrs, with a diaper change at roughly the same interval throughout the day. I just started back to work, but am fortunate enough to be able to work from home for a few weeks. Any time not taken up by feeding/burping/diapers now involves conference calls, spreadsheets and a constant barrage of emails. Evenings are claimed by laundry, cleaning, prepping for night-time feedings/burpings/diapers and feeding the farm critters (goats, sheep, ducks, dogs, etc). All-in-all, we are fitting 36 hours worth of work and activity into a very short 24 hour period. Rinse and repeat the next day (weekends included) over the course of the foreseeable future!

Don’t get me wrong – I would never complain. I am adapting to the new schedule, and am making the most of his very structured schedule to take care of work, my business, blogging, editing photos, etc. That’s with a newborn – getting things done with a baby/toddler/adolescent can’t be any more difficult, could it?!?

I am very ready for this journey. Nervous? Of course! Anyone that goes into parenting with the notion that they ‘know it all’ is either delusional or has never been around children. I go into this with a ‘prayer upon my heart’ and a sense of adventure on my mind. I have the opportunity to make an unparalleled impact upon the life of a little human being – and possibly on the world itself. It is up to me (and my wife, of course) to help keep him on the right path as much as possible, and be there for any stumbles or falls.

I’d love to hear feedback – any advice for a new dad?

If you are interested in rooting your AT&T/Bell/etc Samsung Galaxy Note, check out RootGalaxyNote.com’s guide on how to root this great new device. If you aren’t sure why you would want to root an Android phone or device, I would probably do some more reading online before jumping into making these types of modifications. My primary reason for wanting to Root my Galaxy Note was that I didn’t like not being able to delete ‘bloatware’ apps that AT&T had installed on the device. Although some may find use for them, I was not happy when the AT&T Messages app took over my voicemail and SMS notifications, and made it where I couldn’t fully integrate Google Voice. After having to make a call to AT&T’s Customer Service to have my voicemail reset, I was still getting SMS notifications via the Messages app instead of Google Voice. After rooting my phone, I installed Titanium Backup and deleted this and other unnecessary applications without a problem.

Another plus to Rooting your AT&T Android device is being able to unlock WiFi Tethering (if your device supports it). I won’t be posting instructions to do so on the site, but there are plenty of great guides and YouTube videos on how to do so. With Titanium Backup and a rooted phone, this literally takes 30 seconds to do.

Follow the instructions here to root your AT&T (Or Bell, Telus, Rodgers) Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-i717.

The only thing that I can add is to make sure that you don’t have Samsung Kies running while you try using Odin – there is a good chance that it won’t recognize your phone and/or give you a serial port error. If this happens – don’t fret! Unplug any extra USB peripherals (other than Keyboard/Mouse), close Kies, and try again.

I have been eying Android devices for quite some time now, but haven’t found one that enticed me enough to take the plunge away from the iOS ecosystem (in which I have invested significant resources over the years). Earlier this year, along came the Samsung Note – a ridiculously large device at first glance, but one that was so outside the norm that it caught my attention.

I kept reading the reviews, and waiting for the first big ‘Oops’ moment that comes along with any new ‘category defining’ flagship device. Months later, I was still waiting. I put my personal phone (iPhone 4) for sale on Craigslist, and had it sold within 2-3 days for almost the same price that I had originally paid for it. I redeemed some of my Best Buy reward points for a $45 voucher, and came away with a Samsung Note and $40 in my pocket. Not a bad tradeoff.

With one day of use behind me, I am very happy with my decision. The OS runs very smoothly, display is gorgeous, and 4g data speeds are respectable – only 4x faster than my DSL connection at home (live in the mountains). Overall I feel that I will be very happy with this phone/tablet (phablet as some have been calling it).

Disclaimer – I may not have been so eager to jump into the Android pool if I didn’t have an iOS backup. My work phone is an iPhone 4s, so I still have access to the $$$$’s worth of applications. I will say one thing though – yesterday was the first day in years that I did not have an iOS device with me at all times, and it wasn’t as badly missed as I expected!

Update 1: Still getting used to the Android ecosystem. I have tried using the same apps as on my iPhones, but have been finding that they aren’t always the best on the Android side. Tweetdeck for example – excellent on the PC and iPhone, but crashes on the Samsung Note. Firefox is my preferred browser on the PC, but the Android version doesn’t have Flash functionality. I’ll get the hang of it eventually!

After upgrading the firmware on my Verizon 3g/4g LTE modem, I began having trouble connecting to the network. I combed through a number of articles and forums. Most said to restart the software, plug and unplug the modem, and other ‘fixes’. Two weeks of having to do this repeatedly throughout the day, I delved back into the web to find a better solution.

This morning I managed to find a helpful post. There were a number of the aforementioned tips, as well as a link to a Verizon help doc/file that may have solved the problem. Direct Download link is here. A breakdown of the issue and solution is below:

There is a device detection issue with the 2730h build in which the application thinks the device is an NDIS (“LAN”) device. With the build and firmware previous to 2730h, the device was indeed in “LAN” mode so there were no issues connecting. Since you upgraded the device to WinMB, the build sometimes thinks the device is in “LAN” mode (ROOT CAUSE) so it uses a certain set of functions to establish the connection. Obviously, these commands are incorrect so you reach said errors. As a quick workaround, you can either re-run the application or hit the “Detect Device” button. At these points, the application correctly identifies the device as a WinMB device and uses the correct set of functions to establish the connection. A more permanant solution is to actually set the device to back to LAN mode. Once in LAN mode, the application does not confuse the device mode and all your problems go away. In order to set it to LAN mode, use the link that had previously provided. Again, there is a bug in the software but it has already been addressed in the next release.

Overall, the process is very easy. I skipped verifying the software/ firmware versions, as I already knew that I had a problem. I closed down my VZAccess launcher, but left the modem in the USB port. Next, I did the following:

Run UML290 LAN Mode Setting SimpleTool.exe

Verify that the device is showing as ‘Connected’

Select the ‘Checking Device’ button

Wait for the ‘Checking Device Connection Success’ notification

Click on the Set to LAN Mode button and wait for “LAN mode setting was successfully completed”
message.

Wait for the modem to be rebooted and re-detected by Windows. It will show up as a new device, and will install drivers/etc. This is perfectly normal.

Run VZAccess Manager, and click to connect. If the fix worked, the modem will connect without any error codes or warnings (provided, of course that you have signal).

If asked, set the new connection preferences (Home, Work, Public). I set mine as Home to allow for full VPN functionality, etc.

To make sure that the device is in LAN mode, go to the Network indicator (on the bottom-right of the taskbar, next to the clock). Instead of showing a WiFi-style connection with an antenna signal indicator, you will have a network name with an icon indicating the connection type you chose in Step 8 above.

Essentially, this change forces Windows to accept the Verizon connection as-is, instead of trying to treat it as a wireless/WiFi connection. Verizon Access Manager does a good job taking care of everything on its end, once Windows gets out of the way. This is something that was done in the original firmware but was broken by the new update. Hopefully, as mentioned above, it will be corrected in the next release. Until then, let me know if it worked/failed on your end! Any questions can be posted as a comment below.

New Tokina AT-X 11-16 f/2.8 PRO DX Ⅱ lens announced

The original version of this lens is one of the best ultra-wide DX lenses out there. It is sharp (for an UW), fast (constant f/2.8), sturdy, and an all-around better option that the other DX Ultrawides on the market. I have yet to see the performance of this iteration, but there is a good chance that it will be worth every penny. The initial price (converting from Japanese Yen) of $1000 is a bit steep, but is sure to drop to around the $600-$700 mark.

This lens is for crop sensors (DX for Nikon), but in a pinch, it can be used as a 16mm prime on an FX body.

Also – based on the more »

UPDATE: When I plugged in my iPad, it ended up overwriting the drivers with an unsigned variant. It is my theory that devices that any devices that have not yet been updated to iOS5 may trigger this reaction. I was able to re-sign the drivers, and set them to Read-Only.

Also – based on the traffic that I have been getting, I am most definitely not the only one that is having this problem. Is this going to be AntennaGate all over again? Spread the news about the ‘fix’ for now – I’m sure that one of the Gizmo blogs will catch on soon

UPDATE 2: I am making the ‘signed’ drivers available below. You will still have to follow the instructions to enable ‘test’ mode, but should be able to d/l the drivers and put them into their respective folders.

Update 3: If the driver is being overwritten, then proceed to steps 22 and on below:

Click Here to sign up for DropBox if you don’t already have an account. It is completely free.

Driver Downloads: usbaaplrc.dll (Goes into C:\Windows\System32\) and usbaapl64.sys (Goes into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers)

_________________________-

I have been eagerly anticipating the release of iOS5 for my iPhone and iPad. The day finally came, and I quickly proceeded to download Itunes 10.5. Immediately after installing the update, I plugged in my iPhone. A warning popped up – the driver wouldn’t install. Itunes (and my laptop) refused to acknowledge my phone for what it was. I couldn’t update my iPhone, or charge the iPhone from the computer.

After hours of various combinations of installing/uninstalling, I was finally able to get it going. Below are some instructions that may help you along your way: (Note: Instructions are for Windows 7 64bit. May vary if you are running a different OS)

1. Go to Start, Control Panel, Uninstall, and uninstall ANYTHING that has Apple, Inc listed as being the publisher.

2. Restart the computer.

3. Download the newest version of iTunes 64bit.

4. Right click on the download, and click “Run As Administrator”.

5. Disable your antivirus. Install iTunes. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR IPHONE, IPOD OR IPAD ISN’T PLUGGED IN.

6. After iTunes installs, you can play it safe and reboot again, or:

7. Open iTunes, and plug in your Apple iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

8. If anything unexpected happens, you have a few more steps to follow.. Fun, I know.

9. Go to This Link and follow the instructions to download dseo13b.exe.

10. Run the program in Administrator Mode, and enable Test Mode.

11. You may be instructed to reboot. If so, then do so.

12. Run dseo13b.exe in Administrator Mode again, but this time select “Sign a system file”.

13. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers (or applicable drive letter, etc) and find the .dll and .sys files. Copy the full path for the .dll file, including the file name, into the DSEO window, and run it.

14. Repeat the process for the .sys file.

15. Go to your Start Menu, the type “Device Manager” into the search bar. Run Device Manager. Scroll down until you find the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. This should have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside of it.

16. Double click on the Device Name, and go to Driver Details.

17. Note the path for the .sys file. Open an Explorer window, follow the path (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\usbaapl64.sys for me).

18. Copy the .sys driver that you had ‘signed’ earlier. Find the matching driver in the System folder that you have opened. Rename it to include the word ‘backup’ in the title.

19. Paste the .sys driver into the appropriate folder.

20. Repeat the process for the .dll file (Path was C:\Windows\System32\usbaaplrc.dll for me).

21. Open iTunes, and plug in your iDevice. Hopefully, it should now be recognized by Windows and iTunes. If not, reboot your computer and try again.

22. UPDATED: To prevent the drivers from being overwritten, Right Click on the driver, and go to Properties. Click on the Security tab, then click the ‘Edit’ button.

23. UPDATED: Make sure that ‘System’ is highlighted, and ‘check’ Write in the Deny column. Click OK, then Apply in the properties window. Note: DO NOT change permissions for your account, or the Administrator account. This will lock you out of the file, and won’t allow you to make future changes.

If you have any other problems, post a comment and I’ll see what I can do!
